As the weather cools down and the leaves change color, it's time to start thinking about home maintenance for the fall season. Here are 10 home maintenance tips for fall to help keep your home in top shape all season long.

1. Get a Roof Inspection

While it doesn't get too cold here in Los Angeles County, fall weather can still take a toll on your roof, so getting a roof inspection before the new season hits is vital. A qualified roofing contractor can check for any damage and repair as needed.

2. Clean the Gutters and Spouts

Your gutters play an important role in protecting your home from water damage. However, fall foliage can quickly accumulate in your gutters and hinder proper water drainage. To avoid this, clean your gutters and spouts before the fall season begins.

3. Look for & Seal Any Air Leaks

One of the best ways to improve your home's energy efficiency as the weather cools down is to look for and seal any air leaks. By sealing up any gaps or cracks, you can help keep your home warmer and reduce energy bills.

4. Aerate Your Soil

If you have a lawn, now is the time to aerate the soil. Aerating helps improve drainage, reduce compaction, and encourage new growth. You can do it yourself with a hand aerator or hire a professional.

5. Prepare the Lawn & Sprinkler System

Before the cold weather sets in, there are a few other steps to ensure your lawn is in good shape. Fertilize and seed any bare spots, and mow the lawn one last time. You should also drain your sprinkler system and cover exposed pipes to prevent them from freezing if a cold snap hits.

6. Repair Damaged Walkways

If you have cracked or damaged walkways, now are the time to repair them. Cold weather can worsen these problems by causing the concrete or asphalt to shift and crack even more, so it's best to take care of them now.

7. Check Your Detectors & Fire Extinguishers

House fires and carbon monoxide leaks are more common in the cooler weather months, so it's critical to make sure your safety equipment is in good working order. Test your detectors monthly and check the expiration date on your fire extinguishers. If you notice any issues, get them fixed as soon as possible.

8. Clean the Chimney and Fireplace

If you have a fireplace, now is the time to have the chimney cleaned and inspected. This will help prevent fires and keep your family safe all season long.

9. Get Your Heating System Checked

Before you turn on the heat, it's a good idea to get your heating system checked by a professional. To avoid safety hazards, replace your furnace filter and ensure all vents are clear.

10. Inspect Your Humidifier

Humidity levels drop in the fall and winter, leading to dry skin, static electricity, and respiratory issues. To help combat this, if you have one, inspect your central humidifier and make sure it is in good working condition. If you don’t have a central unit, you should consider purchasing portable humidifiers for the main living areas and bedrooms.
